Author Dr. Bob Cutillo brings hope and light into this darkening world as he launches ‘Holding on in the Storm’

At right on the two stools: Dr, Bob Cutillo talks with event emcee Steve Ridge about the inspiration he and his readers have drawn from Rembrandt’s painting on the cover of his new book, Holding on in the Storm. (A copy of the painting is on the easel next to Bob.)

Since our publishing house was founded nearly two decades ago, one of our core values has been: “Good media builds healthy community.” From that powerful motto, over the years, we’ve been impressed by how many authors go beyond the printed word to transform their books into opportunities for quite literally building up those healthy communities.

Case in point this week: Dr. Bob Cutillo in Denver worked with friends to turn a book-launch event into a fundraiser for the non-profit Mile High Workshop. Over the past decade, Mile High Workshop has grown into a multi-faceted Employment Social Enterprise (ESE), a nonprofit business-and-ministry whose primary purpose is to create paid work opportunities for people who face daunting hurdles in joining the traditional labor market.

Bob, his friends and family organized the event on a Friday evening at the Long Table Brewhouse in Denver. They intentionally designed the gathering so that all the profits would be donated to Mile High Workshop—and they invited longtime friends of both Bob and his late wife Heather from church, the community and the nonprofit.

Bob’s presentation—formatted as a Q&A with emcee Steve Ridge—was relatively brief, making room for Adrienne Trafilowski, executive director of Mile High, to talk about the ministry’s work especially with people coming out of addictions or incarceration.

As Adrienne described the event via Mile High’s Linked-in, she wrote that Dr. Cutillo’s “new book speaks honestly about suffering, grief, and hope, themes that resonate deeply with the work we do and the stories carried by so many in our community. These are lessons about walking with others through hard things, not fixing them, not rushing them, but being present and faithful. Thank you to everyone who showed up, asked thoughtful questions, and supported this evening. We are humbled, honored, and encouraged to be included in such a special night and for the generosity shown to our Mile High Workshop family!”

Bob also summed up the event.

We brought together people from many circles, renewing old relationships that had not had the chance to be revived for a long time but were now remembered by an event like this. I believe that the spirit of God was present with us, animating the conversation, the presentation, and especially the community of people who came together. It well honored Heather. Her love for people was the glue that connected it all together.

I am grateful for the special angels and allies who relieved me of much of the responsibility and did all the hard work to make this event possible. I remain amazed by the enthusiasm, interest, and energy of all who were able to attend. It gives me hope that the message of this book can reach many who will benefit from it.
