EDITOR’S NOTE: Many of our authors also teach at various levels from their congregations and community nonprofits to universities and graduate schools. Author Laura Elizabeth has begun teaching about her art-form—the cozy mystery. We asked her to send us this update to encourage other authors to reach out in similar ways.

‘Characters come alive’

Experiencing my characters come alive through the flow of All Is Now Lost—the first book in my Island Mysteries series—brought me tremendous joy.

Last week, I had the good fortune of teaching more than 20 aspiring and existing writers how to develop the people and the place of their own stories in a writing workshop held at the Osher Lifeline Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of South Carolina.

This course called “I’ve Got Something to Say—Writing Your Story Your Way” focused on several strategies for character development (including using the setting as a character), tips and tricks for editing during the writing process,  and how to build an author community. The session included some writing exercises and a few examples from All Is Now Lost.

It was a fun afternoon filled with lively discussion and networking.

There are three OLLI locations within the Lowcountry and I am hoping to bring additional courses to more “Mongin Island” writers and readers soon!
